Oleg Kulik - GLASSTRESS 2011 with the Venice Biennale

Oleg Kulik l’artista partecipa inoltre ad uno degli eventi più interessanti tra quelli collaterali alla Biennale di Venezia. GLASSTRESS 2011, questo il titolo della mostra, è curata da Lidewij Edelkoort, Peter Noever e Demetrio Paparoni e si svolgerà nelle sale di Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti (sede dell’Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti). Per quest’occasione l’artista ha appositamente ideato un’opera in vetro che intende dar seguito alla mobilitazione in difesa dell’artista, fotografo e architetto Ai Weiwei, incarcerato dal regime per le proprie idee. La grande scultura in vetro di Kulik (l’intero ricavato della vendita andrà ad una organizzazione che sostiene Ai Weiwei) raffigura l’artista cinese Zhang Huan (secondo Kulik sostenuto dal regime) che, ricoperto di bistecche (come nella sua celebre performance del Whitney Museum), tiene al guinzaglio Ai Weiwei, raffigurato con il corpo di Budda e con un seme di girasole al posto del cuore.

Oleg Kulik will be participating in one of the most interesting events taking place in parallel with the Venice Biennale: GLASSTRESS 2011. Curated by Lidewij Edelkoort, Peter Noever and Demetrio Paparoni, the event will be held in the rooms of Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti (headquarters of the Veneto institute of science, literature and the arts). The artist has created a work in glass specifically for the occasion, designed to draw attention to and support efforts to defend Chinese artist, photographer and architect Ai Weiwei, who was imprisoned by the regime for his controversial ideas. Kulik’s large glass sculpture portrays Chinese artist Zhang Huan (whom Kulik believes is supported by the same regime that imprisoned Weiwei), covered with beefsteaks (an echo of Huan’s famous performance at Whitney Museum), holds Ai Weiwei on a leash. Weiwei is portrayed with the Buddha’s body, and with a sunflower seed as his heart. All proceeds from the sale of this artwork will be donated to an organization supporting Ai Weiwei.
